Technology is an awesome thing when we’re talking about putting people on the moon and discovering wonder drugs and therapies to help people feel better. Technology is horrible for managing person-to-person interactions and other human activities. Job search is a perfect example. Technology has killed anything human in the job search process. This column is about bringing some of the human energy back into your job search.

I’m sure employers thought they were terribly up-to-date and forward-looking when they installed those godforsaken Black Hole recruiting systems, also known as ATS (applicant tracking system) software. They suck, like Black Holes out in space. You send a resume into one of those things and its atoms get shredded and sent down a wormhole to another dimension. Every time you pitch a resume into a Black Hole, a little bit of your soul dies.

There’s a better way to job-hunt. Here are five small but powerful weapons to use in your job search and take back a piece of your humanity. Technology has turned what used to be a friendly job-search process into a cold and sterile, mechanical and mojo-crushing affair. That’s okay. We can have our revenge. We can use technology to beat Godzilla at his own game, one job-seeker at a time.

“Who’s Around?” is the name of our favorite LinkedIn search. It’s easy to conduct a “Who’s Around?” search. Just jump to the Advanced People Search page on LinkedIn by clicking on the word “Advanced” next to the blue box and the search bar at the top of the page.

Once you’ve reached the Advanced Search page, type in your location and any keywords that relate to your job search. You’re looking for other people in your geography whose profiles include the keywords you selected.

How will that help you? This “Who’s Around?” search will make you aware of local employers who have employees that work with the same tools, technologies and topics that you do. You’ll create your target employer list in no time using the “Who’s Around?” search to become aware of employers (by way of their employees’ LinkedIn profiles) that might not have hit your radar screen otherwise.


Blind job ads, the ones that don’t identify the hiring employer, are very un-Human-Workplace-like and if you go to work in a place that posts job ads like that, I’m relying on you get them to stop. Still, you might want to go after a job that you see advertised in a blind job ad, so you’ve got to know how to un-blind an ad in order to use the Pain Letter/Human-Voiced Resume approach and reach your hiring manager directly.

Here’s how you can un-blind a blind job ad. This works about seventy-five percent of the time. Look at a blind job ad and search for any phrase that isn’t pure boilerplate language like “We seek a hands-on Marketing Manager.”

Look for any phrase that has the slightest hint of distinctiveness in it. These are likely to be phrases lifted from the employer’s standard branding materials or its website.

Take that ever-so-slightly distinctive phrase, put quotation marks around it and pop it into a Google search box. Maybe the phrase you found in the job ad describes the organization. “Family-owned distributor of leisure publications.” Bada bing, bada boom, thanks to the quotation marks that keep the distinctive phrase intact in the search, Google finds the identical verbiage on the About Us page of the website for Celestial Books. Once you’ve ID’d the employer, you can find your hiring manager’s name on LinkedIn.


Godzilla and his minions have made online job-hunting a tedious and discouraging affair, but you can leave the Black Hole alone and reach your hiring manager directly with your Pain Letter and Human-Voiced Resume. You can find your hiring manager on LinkedIn. Think about the job you’d want in your target organization. Let’s say it’s Purchasing Agent.

Who manages a Purchasing Agent? Most likely it’s the Purchasing Manager, Procurement Manager, Director of Materials, Operations Director or VP of Operations. You can have fun trying various titles in your LinkedIn People Searches until you spot Mr. or Ms. Right. Now you can compose a Pain Letter that addresses your prospective new boss’s Business Pain directly, and get back the time you used to waste responding to job ads.


To write a Pain Letter that’s relevant to your hiring manager’s situation, you’ve got to have some idea of the Business Pain your target employer is facing. You can’t be in business without having problems. It’s the nature of business! You solve one problem, and you get a new one. Every business, large and small, has a problem or more than one, and problems are the only reason any organization hires a new person. If things are working perfectly, they’re not going to pay an extra salary.

Here’s a chart that gives you some starting points to identify your target employer’s Business Pain. This chart looks at the type of organization you’re planning to approach and suggests Business Pains that the company might be facing.

Our last tip for job-seekers who want to take back the control of their job hunts and get great jobs is to add a human voice to the online job application. Here are two ways to do that.

When the online job application asks you to list the Tasks and Duties at a past job, skip the Tasks and Duties and talk about the mark you left on the job, instead.

Report Your Salary Target, Not Salary History

Employers ask for your salary history, but why? That’s none of their business. Are they going to tell you what they paid the last guy in your job? Of course not. What’s private to them is obviously private to you, too. Keep your salary history to yourself.

On an online job application, put your current salary target (let’s say it’s $45,000/year) in the box marked “Salary” for every job you’ve ever held. If you worked next to me at Burger King in Cedar Grove, New Jersey in 1978, go ahead and put $45,000 in the “salary” box for that Burger King job. Do the same for every job you’ve ever had. In the first available Comment box or field, write “All salary figures reported in this form reflect my current salary target.”

All they need to decide whether your salary is a match with theirs is one figure, and that’s your current salary target. Don’t listen to weenies who tell you that you’re bound to give up anything an employer asks of you, private-information-wise. That’s hogwash. Mojofied job seekers like you know better than to grovel for a job. After all, if they don’t get you, they don’t deserve you.

How To Become A Master Of Creativity

Masters of creativity are masters of creativity because they know “how“ to think and not necessarily “what“ to think. If you really want to become more creative, you can become (significantly) more creative both in your personal and professional life by adopting a specific mindset and applying particular strategies and techniques. You might not become the next Albert Einstein. However, you certainly will become (much) more creative than someone who does not know the contents and methods described in this article. You could even become a master of creativity yourself, if you were willing to work hard enough on yourself.

By nature we have the talent to make sense out of these mashed letters as we have the gift to immediately see essential aspects as the human mind looks at things in a holistic manner.

The only problem is that as adults we have unlearned and forgotten how to look at things differently and how to think like a child. Pablo Picasso once said: „Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.“ In other words: How can we re-learn how to think like a child?

I´m very fortunate having worked in the past for some of the most creative and innovative companies in the world. What I´ve learned and practiced there in respect of increasing my own as well as others´ creativity I´d like to share with you in this article which was also inspired by the superb books of Michael Michalko: Thinkertoys and Cracking Creativity.

FIRSTLY, you need to follow a specific creative thinking attitude as the basis for any sustainable improvements. It consists of three levels (topic of this article). Afterwards, in a SECOND STEP, you can train your creativity skills by utilizing different techniques and exercises (topic of my next article when I´ll present you my favorite creative techniques and practical exercises).

LEVEL 1 – Acquire And Cultivate A Creative Thinking Pattern

Thinking without Limits and Limitations
Consider yourself as an active subject rather than a passive objective. Meaning you´re the acting and driving force. You can do, influence, and change whatever you´d like to do. If you believe it, you become this person and the world around will follow you. If, however, you were to limit yourself by believing that you can´t do it, then your environment would make you to adjust to it. Often the difference between a creative and non-creative person is that the creative person believes that she is creative and the less creative person believes he´s not. A very powerful technique is to repeat to yourself or to write down what psychologists call positive affirmations.

Acting like a creative Person
Once you´ll have started visualizing yourself as a creative person by having applied e.g. positive self-affirmations, you´ll start believing that it´s true. And with such a belief it will become true, since naturally you´ll focus more on related occasions and own behaviors which will lead to good personal experiences and successes. And success will breed more success. You will begin to be more creative than you would have thought possible at the start. Once you assume with deep and honest intentions the role of a certain person, and if you constantly cultivate her behavior, her modus operandi, her movements and motions, her way to approach topics, eventually you´ll become very similar to this person.

Being Joyful and Positive
Creative people are what I refer to as HPCDA persons, i.e. happy-positive-can-do-attitude persons. They think in terms such as “what is,“ “how to do it differently,“ “what else can be done“ instead of “what is not,“ “how not doing it,“ or “what else is not working.“ They would look for various options and would create their own solutions and reality.

Deciding to be Happy
If you are negative, you can´t be creative. Your thoughts affect your attitude, which in turn affects your behavior. To close the circle, in return your behavior determines your attitude. The good news is that you can change your thoughts yourself. With will, energy, and focus. A successful technique is to trigger positive emotions by thinking for some moments about joyful and pleasant social occasions (e.g. gathering with family and friends, great parties, etc.) Another effective technique is to model and to mimick happy people: their faces, voices, postures, etc. Unconsciously we´ll be come happier ourselves.

Strenghthening your Resilience Level
Getting back on track again after difficult experiences and loses, not giving up, and instead bouncing back into the original, or even into a stronger position than before, is what we call Resilience. There are people who naturally possess certain personality traits that assist them coping with setbacks and bringing them quickly back on a good track. Today we know that many of these skills can be learned by anyone. As such they will help you to tackle past or upcoming problems head-on and to become more creative and more successful. Resilient people just would never give up until having found a solution.

Being determined to learn
Creativity is like many other personal characteristics not something which is genetically determined. Although many people still believe so and/ or would like to think so in order to make things easier for themselves by pretending that they are not able doing and learning it anyway. In reality, there is no secrete to creativity. You do not need a magic wand to acquire creative skills. Instead a strong will and deterrmination is needed to embark on the ceativity adventure by wanting to study specific startegies and techniques.

Never accepting the first best Solution
Some people will never become a master of creativity based on one simple reason: As soon as they have found an answer or a solution, they stop thinking and searching. They´re happy gobbling down fastfood and not willing to wait for a nice steak, lobster, and a salad in a nice restaurant. They are satisfied with the first best solution which comes along. Statistically, however, there is no reason that the first answer is the best one. Often, as we all know, it would have been better to continue our search, to generate more options, to evalute them a little bit longer, and then making a more profound and a more creative decision.

Asking, asking, and asking
Have you ever observed a master of creativity? One thing he would do most of the time is asking questions, questions, and more questions. Often he would write something in his little black book or in his iPad. Like a child he would ignore irritated faces of grown ups who have been asked tons of questions e.g. by their little ones – or who have in their opinion been asked even too many questions. Instead the creative mind would indulge himself in satisfying his lust for curiosity by throwing questions at them. It does not take creative genius to ask questions. It takes courage, curiosity, persistency, patience, and sometimes charm, sensitivity, and politeness. Plus often the willingness to listen. An attitude unfortunately not many people are used to practice any longer in today´s hectic times.

Collecting, storing and organizing Information
Masters of creativity love collecting tons of information. Quantity is king for them (rather than quality to start with). They believe that the more information they acquire, the more perspectives they can obtain, and the higher the probability will be to generate proper solutions. Afterwards they store collected information and ideas in order of browsing through them over and over again. They judge the value of all information pieces and ideas by having set up criteria which suit the specific problem (e.g. which criteria are essential, desirable, optional, etc.?). Often they will add their own experience and intuition to judge and to rank the ideas. Finally, they would discuss their ideas with other people to get feedback, to refine them, and to further develop them.

LEVEL 2 – Understand the Benefit of changing Perspectives
In a next step you should embrace the concept of altering the perspective you´re looking at a problem. You can vastly expand your possibilities until to realize something new once you´ll have changed your point of view. That´s why highly creative people love playing around with changing perspectives like little kids love pretending they would be one of their favorite comic heros, sports idols, etc. Masters of creativity constantly try to find new perspectives on an issue by restructuring and remodeling it in some way. If they are lost or stuck, they would look at it in different ways until they would come up with one or various solutions. The more times you express a problem in a different way, the more likely it is that you´ll arrive at a new and deeper perspective.

That´s how you remodel and reconstruct your problem:

  • Switch perspectives, the more often and the more diverse, the better
  • Question everything, don´t accept anything
  • Chunk up (generalize the problem at hand by making it more abstract) and also chunk down (go deeper and deeper to the root of the issue by making it more specific)
  • Change the sentences and the words of the problem statement by rephrasing it. Use whatever words you´d like to. There´s no right and wrong
  • Separate the parts from the whole. Fractionize the problem. Slice it apart piece by piece. Move from one detail to another until you´ll arrive at its origin. Examine all the factors and relationships that may influence the issue

A highly effective Exercise to change Perspectives

Let´s assume you have a great new business idea, you´re just at the beginning of wanting to evaluate it and you´re not sure about how to undertake next steps to further review it. That´s a classic example of trying to look at your idea using multiple perspectives:

  • In a first step, write down your business idea from your point of view. Formulate the idea, its USP, etc.
  • In a second step, write it from the perspective of potential customers. How would they describe it? What´s important to them? What would they possibly like and not like?
  • In a third step, formulate the idea from the perspective of other key stakeholders, e.g. possible business partners, employees, investors, relevant organizations, etc.
  • Finally, synthesize all perspectives into one all-encompassing idea statement

Having written multiple versions from different perspectives on the same idea, will have generated different perspectives with different possibilities.

Highly creative people would even go a step further: They would imagine that they represent the problem, that they are the problem or at least part of it (which sometimes is the case in reality). It´s what I call being “in the eye of the storm.“ By trying to see the problem from its own perspective they somehow merge with the problem. As a consequence they often find truly innovative and creative solutions. Imagine you are the product manager at a sporting goods company and you were asked to develop and to market the new ball for NFL´s next Super Bowl championship game.

Following the “in the eye of the storm“ approach you might ask yourself the following questions:

  • How would I feel being the new ball?
  • How would I like to fly through the air?
  • What would I like to achieve?
  • How would others like to play with me?
  • How could I score best?

LEVEL 3 – Aspire being a Non-Expert
Many people strive to become an expert of some sort. They often believe that it´s needed to get recognition and to build their credibility upon. Masters of creativity, however, have realized that the more expert you become, the more difficult it is to stay open-minded and to produce truly creative ideas.

In this third, and most challenging level towards becoming a creative mind, it´s all about not to specialize your thinking and not to become an expert. Experts often put borders and imaginative walls around their thinking. They have a tendeny to build their searching strategies on what they know best. As a result they often arrive at repetitive (and useless) conclusions. They fail to investigate the whole issue by only looking at (known) parts of it.

On the contrary, non-experts approach issues with a non-polluted mind. Since they lack expertise – and as such being borderless thinkers – they can pull any problem apart, look at every single piece of it, and often come forward with creative and innovative ideas.

Non-experts get inspired by other non-experts who themselves are full of ideas and imagination. They would talk to and interview people from totally different backgrounds, i.e. being far away from their problem at hand.

Job Interview: Why Only 3 Questions Really Matter

Even for the most fearless amongst us, job interviews can be nerve wracking. In order to give us the best chance of success we tend to prepare for many of the difficult questions we anticipate, questions like:

  • Why should we hire you?
  • What can you do for us that other candidates can’t?
  • What are your key strengths and weaknesses?

Of course, you can never predict how an interview will go and what questions you will get. You might get an interviewer who fires one tough question at you after the other, or one that turns the interview into a more comfortable, natural two-way conversation. Preparing, therefore is difficult. In most cases we practice the answers to a long list of possible questions. The problem is that this can leave you over-prepared and as a consequence your pre-conceived answers can come across a bit robotic.

From my experience, there are really only 3 questions you have to prepare for and you can link most of the interview questions back to these three. Preparing for these three questions also means you can answer most questions more naturally, simply by referring mentally back to your preparations for these three questions.

Basically, any interviewer wants to establish 3 key things:

  1. Have you got the skills, expertise and experience to perform the job?
  2. Are you enthusiastic and interested in the job and the company?
  3. Will you fit into the team, culture and company?

However, during the job interview, the interviewer might use many different questions and angles to get to the answers. If the interviewer doesn’t get what he or she wants from one question, they might ask them in different ways. Or they might probe from different angles to test for consistency in your answers.

Here is what’s behind these 3 questions:

1. Have you got the skills, expertise and experience to perform the job?

Think about the key skills you might need for the job you have applied for and assess your own level of expertise and experience in that context. It makes sense to identify the more specific or technical skills that your potential employer might expect as well as some more generic skills such as being a good communicator, having good IT skills, being a team player, etc. Once you have prepared for this question it will help you answer many different interview questions without getting sidetracked into talking about things that are not relevant. Remember that you want to demonstrate that you are aware of the key skills, expertise and experience required to do the job and that you have what it takes to perform it. Always go back to the key skills, expertise and experience when answering scary (and sometimes silly) questions like:

  • Tell me about yourself?
  • What are your greatest strengths / weaknesses?
  • What can you do for us that other candidates can’t?
  • Why do you think you are right for this job?
  • What do you think the main challenges will be?
  • Etc.

2. Are you enthusiastic and interested in the job and the company?

Any potential employer wants to know that you are interested in the company and excited about the prospect of working there. You therefore want to demonstrate that you have researched the company, understand its strategy, current performance, structure, market position and products and that you can’t wait to join them. For most, you will have done your homework before you even applied for the job, but if you haven’t then check out the ‘about us’ section on their website and search for the latest strategy documents, annual reports, key statistics as well as the company history. Show that you know them and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job and company. Here you might also want to think about your ambitions and how they fit into the company you have applied for. You can then use the insights for answering questions such as:

  • What do you know about our company?
  • What do you think our company is aiming to achieve?
  • What do you know about our products and services?
  • Why do you want to work for this company?
  • Why do you think this job is right for you?
  • What motivates you?
  • Etc.

3. Will you fit into the team, culture and company?

This final key question is about your personality and your style and how you as a person fit into the team and culture of the company. Companies have different cultures, which translate into different ways of behaving and working. It is important to make sure you fit in and don’t feel like a fish out of water. In fact, it is important for the company as well as for you. Again, hopefully you will have done some research prior to applying for the job. Sometimes, it can be tricky to find detailed knowledge about the company culture, in which case you simply talk about your assumptions and why you feel you fit in. One relatively new website that offers a glance inside companies is Glassdoor. The site is still in its infancy but provides a growing amount of data and information about what it is like to work for different companies. You want to map the culture of the company or the team you are planning to join and compare this to your personality traits, style and behaviors. Again, once you have done this you can use it to answer questions such as:

  • How would you describe your work style?
  • How would you describe yourself?
  • How would your colleagues describe you?
  • What makes you fit into our company?
  • What makes you a good team member?
  • If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
  • Etc.

Of course, any interview is a two-way process. In the same way the interviewer wants to find out that you are right for the company, you need to assess whether the company is right for you. Each of the questions can be turned around so that you can assess:

  1. By joining this company, will I make best use of my skills and expertise and will they help me to grow them further?
  2. Is the company excited about having me work for them and will they give me the necessary support?
  3. Is the company culture the right fit for me so that I can flourish and be myself?

If you ask relevant questions from your point of view then this will make the interview more balanced and create a more natural conversation.
